Dimethyl terephthalate is mainly used in the manufacture of polyester resins, which in turn are used to manufacture films and fibers, as well as high-strength polyester insulating varnishes. Polyester films are mainly used as electrical insulation materials and for making films (e.g., as a base material for motion picture films, X-ray films, photographic soft copies of Chemicalbook and audio tapes, video tapes, electronic computer tapes, etc.). The most common use of polyester resins is in the manufacture of fibers for fabrics, fishing nets, carpets, tire cord, etc. It is also used to produce the plasticizer dioctyl terephthalate.
